The Exeter and District Kidney Patient Association is a registered charity run by its members for the benefit of pre/dialysis and transplant patients. Its aim is to improve the quality of patients’ lives by directly supporting patients and also assisting with purchase of equipment for dialysis units which makes dialysis patients’ lives easier.

What do we use funds for?

Assistance with funding for satellite dialysis units in Devon and Somerset

This includes fundraising for additional units: Devon and Somerset are such large counties that travelling three times weekly to a unit (sometimes a round trip of over 150 miles) is debilitating for patients who need dialysis three times weekly for fours hours each time.  Part financing the Honiton dialysis unit in 2008. This (along with South Molton and Yeovil) have provided significant benefit for patients, who no longer have to travel to Exeter three times a week (where fours hours’ treatment often took the whole day due to travel times).

Equipment in the Exeter and Satellite Units to make patients lives easier:

In recent years, with the National Health cut backs, the EDKPA have stepped in to ensure units are equipped to ensure dialysis patients are catered for. This include funding items of equipment (e.g. reclining chairs, kidney machines, trolley telephones, blood pressure cuffs, books, staff training  etc.). It also includes funding for televisions for the units (a vital part of dialysis, when treatment is usually for three hours, three times a week).

Weekend breaks and social activities for members

The Association arranges a number of weekend breaks and trips for patients and carers – these are very popular and are a source of support and enjoyment for many members.

Financial Support for members

Dialysis is a constant treatment and can cause a huge change in lifestyle. While many patients lead reasonably normal lives, many have to give up work (or change the way they work) in order to fit around dialysis. The EDKPA does all it can to support patients in every way in order to maintain and improve the quality of life.

Thank you for your support.
