Fit for the queen....

It’s not every day that you find yourself at the Queen’s Garden Party being asked how you keep up with a transplant patient:

“What an unbelievable day”, Wendy said. I didn’t expect to be going to the Royal Garden Party, and never would I have thought I would have spoken to the Queen!” Wendy – who was nominated by her mother for all the tireless work she does to raise awareness for transplantation - was at the party when someone approached her form the hundreds of people there and asked why Wendy and her husband, John were there. Wendy explained about the transplant Games and the need for transplants. A few minutes later, was asked to step forward and speak with the Queen! She and John spoke to her for about three minutes after shaking her hand (‘she had a very gentle handshake’), talking about transplantation. The Queen realised the need for transplants and mentioned there were too few donors available. She also asked what sports Wendy did, then looked at John and asked how on earth he managed to keep up with her!

Wendy said it was a magical moment. The heavens opened up for much of the party, but while she was talking with the Queen, the sun came out for the whole of the three minutes. The Queen left them saying that it was probably an idea to find some shelter as the rain was coming again.

Wendy then went on to say ‘It wouldn’t have happened without a transplant…… or without someone being so thoughtful as to donate a kidney to make my life worthwhile’. A thought all transplant patients carry with them every day….

Well done Wendy! A transplant patient who is trying to do something to put back what she has so gratefully received.
